Capital Bookkeeping

OUR TEAM

Karin Lichtenstein   Owner

Capital Bookkeeping came to be after my last business - a coffee house and art gallery in LoDo went bankrupt one year after opening. That was 1997 and I knew nothing about accounting, which was precisely my downfall!

The business was running my life. Keeping the doors open, coffee stocked and customers happy took all my time and energy, and bookkeeping was the easiest thing to put off - until it was too late. After a miserable year and a $50,000 lost investment, I knew there were other entrepreneurs just like me who needed good bookkeeping and a basic understanding of financials. So I went to Metro State, passed the CPA exam and joined an accounting firm for two tax seasons to prepare myself for starting Capital Bookkeeping in the summer of 2002.

Our mission is to help business owners fulfill their dreams; to run their business and not be run by it and to make smart decisions about what's next. Good, clean bookkeeping is at the heart of it all. If it's junk in, it's junk out, and bad information makes it difficult to succeed.
I don't tell my story lightly. I share it as a first-hand caveat that even the most promising business can slip away and turn bad amid our daily busyness.

Colorado is my home state and a great place to be from! I graduated early from Englewood high school and enrolled in accounting and finance classes at Arapahoe community college. From there I joined US West (not Qwest) in their investment management and accounting department.  After seven years I left to seek new opportunities and care for my 3-year-old daughter.

Late in 2004, a good friend introduced me to Karin Lichtenstein. Little did I know how much bookkeeping was to become “my thing.” I couldn’t be happier. I truly enjoy working with all kinds of people, and seeing new industries and business ideas develop. It’s fun to be part of this entrepreneurship and energy, especially as the “bean counter.”

I am a Colorado native and no matter where I go, I am always drawn back to this beautiful state.

I received an associate's degree in business management and worked for Storage Technology for several years. When my children were young I stayed home, while running a day care business. The next ten years, once both kids were in school, I worked for United Health Care as service advisor. Meanwhile, my husband David had started Majestic Development, a residential construction company. As his business grew I joined as office manager assuming all bookkeeping and office duties. That's how I met Karin Lichtenstein who had set up our QuickBooks files and still monitors our records monthly.

I really enjoy meeting new clients and exploring where we can help in growing their companies. I know first-hand how hard running your own business can be, and I'm glad to help make it easier.

Retained Earnings are the accumulated profits and losses your business generates. QuickBooks automatically updates this number on January 1st if your business reports on a calendar year, or the first day of a new fiscal year as set in your file preferences.
